Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup Turns 25!

The Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup 22nd - 23rd November, which started as a concept to bring together representatives of the duty free industry to Dubai for a few days of friendly competition, has turned out to be one of the most successful and popular golfing events on the industry calendar.

For twenty five years, the Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup has consistently attracted top executives from the duty free industry worldwide, with this year’s event attracting over 115 player including 74 overseas players coming from Great Britain, Germany, France, Ireland, Denmark, Australia, Switzerland, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines and the Netherlands, with the remaining players living in the UAE and Gulf region and including representatives from duty free operations in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Bahrain.

Day one of the tournament will kick off on November 22nd with play taking place at the Trump International Golf Club and will move to the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club on the second day. Commenting on the forthcoming tournament, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman & CEO of Dubai Duty Free, said: “The 25th running of this tournament represents another milestone for Dubai Duty Free and we are looking forward to welcoming our players and guest this year. The players enjoy the atmosphere of friendly competition, and the social interaction makes it a good meeting place for those involved in the duty fee industry.”

The past champions of the DDF Golf World Cup include Steve Flanagan (1993/1996), Raimund Legnar (1994), Brendan O’Shea (1995), Noel Fox (1997- 2000), Jan Baljet (2001), Ulrik Moller (2002), Adel Zarooni (2003-2004), Art Miller (2005), John Kammerman (2006), Nayma Maya (2007), Mark Van Huesden (2008), James Kfouri (2009), Gurbax Singh (2010), Clark Francis (2011) Rabih Sfeila (2012), Dermot Davitt (2013), Denise Kennedy (2014), Bayer Khan (2015) and Scott Campbell (2016).

The two-day tournament is by invitation only and for amateur players with a maximum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for ladies. The 36 holes are played in accordance with Stableford rules, with players playing off full handicap.

Following the first day of golf on November 22nd, guests will be invited to relax and enjoy Dubai Duty Free’s customary hospitality at the ever-popular The Irish Village, with special evening entertainment by the Andrew Strong band for an unforgettable experience to all.

DDF’s sporting involvements continue with the Emirates Dubai Rugby 7s from 30th November – 2nd December followed by the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters from 6th - 12th December at Emirates Golf Club.   

As Dubai Duty Free approaches its 34th anniversary on 20th December, which is sure to signal another sales milestone for the airport retailer, the operation is poised for another exciting chapter in its history.
